Even More Strategies to Make ACT Studying Fun ACT Games for Math: 3 Numbers, 21 Results This is a really fun game that Ive used to sharpen my own math skills. In the game, you take three consecutive single-digit numbers (1,2,3; 7,8,9; 3,4,5, etc). Then you use math operations to get resulting numbers from 1 to 21. This game requires you to get really creative with math in a way thats both challenging and fun. Heres one example, using 1, 2, and 3: The numbers 1-21, calculated using digits 1, 2, and 3 2-1=1 2*1=2 2+1=3 2+(3-1)=4 (3+2)*1=5 3*2*1=6 (3*2)+1=7 (3^2)-1= 8 (the /^/ sign means to the power of, and 3 to the power of two, aka 3 squared, is 9) (3^2)*1=9 (3^2)+1=10 x-1=(3^2)+1 (3 squared plus 1 is 9 + 1, or 10. If x-1 results in 10, then x must be 11. So if you solve for x, the result of this problem is 11. Hey, I never said you couldnt use an algebra equation.and I never said you could only use each number once!) Etc (Figure out 12-21 on your own!) You can play this game alone, but it can be even more fun to do this with a partner or two. Getting from 1 to 21 in this way takes a lot of creativity, and having extra thinkers in the game is helpful. As you build up your ACT Math skills, you could even start competing with others, to see who gets to 21 first. ACT Games for Science: Competitive Chart Reading This game should be played with real ACT Science practice materials, such as The Real ACT Prep Guide or the ACT practice science questions from the official website for the test. Remember that one of the main skills tested in ACT Science is your ability to read the tests infographicsthe ACT Science graphs, charts, and tables. So find an ACT Science visual, and look at it carefully with a partner or some teammates. How many different facts can you find in the visual? Try to write down every last fact you are able to read from the infographic. (And check the passage that comes with the infographic tooyou can find a lot of hidden facts by connecting the passage to the visuals.) To give you an example of how this can work, here is an ACT table, with facts taken from it and written out (see page 48 of this official free ACT test PDF for the passage and questions that goes with this table): Fact 1: If you put a Metanil Yellow indicator in a solution with a pH of 0 or 1, it will turn red. Fact 2: If you put the Metanil Yellow indicator in a solution with a pH of 3 to 7 it will turn yellow Fact 3: Etc (Keep writing facts about the indicators and pH values) Here again, you can do this through creative teamwork, or you can have a competition to see who can come up with the most facts, based on the graphic and passage. When you and your team have written down as many facts as possible, go through the questions that follow the ACT Science passage and visuals. Give yourselves a point for any facts you found that also come up in the questions. And subtract a point if a question asks about a fact you didnt think of when you looked at the visual. (As a variation on this, you and your study partners can try to guess which facts from the visual will also appear in the questions, and then see whos right.) ACT Games for Reading: Reading Scavenger Hunt In a real scavenger hunt, youre given a list of objects that you need to find. In an ACT Reading scavenger hunt, youre given a list of answers that you need to find. Where does this list of answers come from? From the test itself, of course. Each ACT Reading passage comes with a set of questions. And these questions are really a list of the answers you need to look for in the passage. An ACT reading scavenger hunt can be played competitively. For game materials, use ACT Reading practice sets such as the ones from the official ACT prep guide or the official ACT website. Give each player a different passage and question set. Then have the players underline every part of their text that contains the answer to a question. Check the players work by looking at the answer key. The winner is either the player who finds all the answers in the text first, or the player who finds the most correct answers within the time limit you set for the game. Two heads are better than one here, so for extra teamwork and extra fun, play the game in pairs, with one pair of ACT study partners competing with another pair of ACT preppers. ACT Games for English: Why Is This Wrong? In ACT Reading, Math, and Science, the focus is finding the right answers. The ACT English Test flips this script, though. Here, you need to find the wrong ways of writing something. Not only that, but you also need to understand why each incorrect answer is wrong. Moreover, understanding why answers are wrong is a more valuable skill than just correctly identifying mistakes. Recognizing grammar rules and applying them is your key to ACT English success. And you can build this skill in a fast-paced, competitive game! To play the Why is this wrong? game for ACT English, youll need some ACT English passages and question sets (again, use the official ACT guide or materials from the ACT website). And youll need at least three players: two or more competitors and one judge. Here are the game rules: The competitors will be given a set of ACT English questions, which prompt test-takers to find mistakes in grammar, mechanics, and style. The judge will look at the ACT English answer key and explanations, and give the competitors the answers to each question, one question at a time. Every time the competitors receive an answer, they need to write down a short explanation for why that answer is the right one, and which rule of written English applies. The judge will award a point to the competitor with the best explanation for the answer. Answers will be judged based on how well-worded the explanation is and how closely it matches the explanation in the ACT answer key. If both players give very similar answersand both answers are correcteach player will get a point. Whenever the game moves on to a new passage and question set, the old judge will step down, and it will be someone elses turn to act as the judge. Even More Strategies to Make ACT Studying Fun In addition to playing ACT games in each section, you can also use the following strategies to make studying for the test as a whole more enjoyable. Buddy Up If you happen to be the studious type, you probably have some studious friends and/or acquaintances. If they’re serious about the ACT, too, invite them to an after school or weekend study session that ends with a battle of the wits using any of the above games. In short, use your study time to help each other with whatever concepts you want, and then challenge your friend to a timed practice test in English, Math, Reading, or Science. Whoever does better (or improves the most from their last practice test) wins. The prize? The loser has to buy lunch or dinner. (Really, though, it can be anythingwhatever creates the best motivation for you!) Even if a game isn’t on the agenda, having another brain around will help you better understand the concepts that have left you scratching your head in the past. Track and Reward Progress When it comes to the ACT, it’s vital to track your progress when preparing. Tracking your progress gives you the chance to catch any parts of your ACT study plan that aren’t working. To up your motivation for tracking progress (and studying), set a series of goals, and reward yourself each time you achieve one. For example, you set a goal to increase your ACT Math score. For each point you improve, you get to eat an ice cream. Though the reward can be anything, try to set modest goals, at least at first. You’ll receive the reward more often, and feel more motivated to improve. So what if youre tricking yourself into a Pavlovian response? It works! One last thing about rewards: plan to give yourself one after the ACT is over. Visualizing a post-ACT reward will put you in a better frame of mind throughout your study sessions and the test itself. Why did he change? What happened to tu rn him from a victimizer into a humanitarian? It is to the great credit of Steven Spielberg that his film Schindlers List does not even attempt to answer that question. Any possible answer would be too simple, an insult to the mystery of Schindlers life. The Holocaust was a vast evil engine set whirling by racism and madness. Schindler outsmarted it, in his own little corner of the war, but he seems to have had no plan, to have improvised out of impulses that remained unclear even to himself. In this movie, the best he has ever made, Spielberg treats the fact of the Holocaust and the miracle of Schindlers feat without the easy formulas of fiction. The movie is 184 minutes long, and like all great movies, it seems too short. It begins with Schindler (Liam Neeson), a tall, strong man with an intimidating physical presence. He dresses expensively and frequents nightclubs, buying caviar and champagne for Nazi officers and their girls, and he likes to get his picture taken with the top b rass. He wears a Nazi party emblem proudly in his buttonhole. He has impeccable black market contacts, and hes able to find nylons, cigarettes, brandy: He is the right man to know. The authorities are happy to help him open a factory to build enameled cooking utensils that army kitchens can use. He is happy to hire Jews because their wages are lower, and Schindler will get richer that way. Schindlers genius is in bribing, scheming, conning. He knows nothing about running a factory and finds Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley), a Jewish accountant, to handle that side of things. Stern moves through the streets of Krakow, hiring Jews for Schindler. Because the factory is a protected war industry, a job there may guarantee longer life. The relationship between Schindler and Stern is developed by Spielberg with enormous subtlety. At the beginning of the war, Schindler wants only to make money, and at the end he wants only to save his Jews. We know that Stern understands this. But there is no mo ment when Schindler and Stern bluntly state what is happening, perhaps because to say certain things aloud could result in death. This subtlety is Spielbergs strength all through the film. His screenplay, by Steven Zaillian, based on the novel by Thomas Keneally, isnt based on contrived melodrama. Instead, Spielberg relies on a series of incidents, seen clearly and without artificial manipulation, and by witnessing those incidents we understand what little can be known about Schindler and his scheme. We also see the Holocaust in a vivid and terrible way. Spielberg gives us a Nazi prison camp commandant named Goeth (Ralph Fiennes) who is a study in the stupidity of evil. (Schindler is able to talk him out of this custom with an appeal to his vanity so obvious it is almost an insult.) The setting is in the Alps for the first part of the book where Oskar is racing motorcycles because he was a professional motorcycle racer. His business takes place in an urban environment in which the Nazis control. Schindler does all of his underground rescuing directly underneath the Nazis noses, without them even noticing. Schindler risked his life daily by going and standing up for what he believes is right. I just want to stand up for the helpless in theses oppressive times.(166) In a totalitarian government Schindler would be considered opposition and he would be destroyed by the Nazi regime. So he was also persecuted against even-though he was a gentile. There are many symbols expressed by Thomas Keneally throughout the book. One symbol is the swastika which is the symbol for the Nazis. The swastika is supposed to mean peace and good luck, but in this case it means world domination and genocide. But that is not the real symbol of this novel. The real symbol is the list. It means saving everybody who is on it. It is a sense of hope for the Jews, they need to be put on the list in order for their lives to be spared. We need the list, Schindler?(109) This is when the Nazis were trying to get the list so they could exterminate all of the Jews who were on it. What Schindler is trying to do takes so much courage and it gives the people of oppression some sense of hope. They have nobody to protect them and what Schindler is doing is revered greatly by the Jewish people as a whole. The symbol of the swastika is completely used out of context. The list however, was a sense of hope. The plot of Schindlers List is to show how one man can stand up in a time of oppression and prevail. During the book Oskar comes to terms with reality and he figures out that he must help all of the Jews. He has to help Jews because his accountant is Jewish and he did not want to see him die because of his religion. He feels that nobody should be killed because of religion. So he decides to take as many Jews under his wing as possible. He puts them to work for him doing various things. He pays them and protects them from the Nazis. I feel I need to help out in some way.(193) He feels that since he helps out that he is doing good for a people. He has to be able to help out his workers. He feels that all people should be equal. He is absolutely right. What he had done was a beautiful thing. Basically, what I have seen is that Schindler was an amazing person. Nobody helped the Jews in World War 2, but Schindler did. It was a highly revered and heroic thing to do. I believe that the equality Schindler felt was truthfully amazing and he should go down in history as a savior. Raise the Red Lantern directed by Yimou Zhang is full of symbolism as many other Chinese films. The director employs a variety of tools to convey such ideas as freedom and dependence, doom and luck, friendship and betrayal, life and death. To convey the idea of ambiguity and uncertainty, Zhang uses dimmed grey and blue color. It is snowing and there is almost no sun light. It is necessary to note that even snow is not white. It only adds obscurity to the scene. The protagonist is wondering in her doubts and she does not see the picture clearly. She does not understand what the real position of a woman is. She is walking through dimmed passages to find out the truth. It is also necessary to stress that there is almost no black color. Emancipation Proclamation Prliminary Events Essay Abraham Lincoln was elected the President of the United States in 1860 with an anti-slavery agenda, and this gave the impression to the Southern States that they no longer belonged in the Union. South Carolina became the first state to secede the Union on December 20, 1860. In the following few months six more states, whose agriculture based economy was dependent on the free labor slavery provided, followed South Carolina’s lead and followed suit. The seven states, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas formed the Confederate States of America and chose the Mississippi senator, Jefferson Davis as their interim president (PBS). Lincoln claimed in his inaugural address in March 1861that it was his responsibility to keep the Union intact. He went on to state that he would not end slavery where it existed, or take back the Fugitive Slave Law (a 1850 law requiring all runaway slaves to the Northern states where slavery did not exist, to be returned to their masters in the South). It was understandable why this position of Mr. Lincoln’s did not sit well with the African Americans or the white Americans against slavery, but what was surprising was that it did not do anything to satisfy the Confederacy. Hence, on April 12, 1861 the Confederates attacked Fort Summer and the Civil Started had started. Immediately following the attacks another four states, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee joined the Confederacy. Even though President Lincoln made it abundantly clear that he was fighting to keep the Union intact and not for slavery or for the rights of the blacks, from the very start the free African Americans rushed to enlist in the army. Their services were refused and laws refusing blacks the right to enlist in the army were maintained because Lincoln wanted to prove to the whites in the Northern states that their privileges as the superior race were not in any danger. The Confederacy on the other hand was using the enslaved labor for efforts to win the war. Slave labor was being used as nurses, laundresses, blacksmiths and they were working in factories and armories (PBS). As the Northern army managed to penetrate into the Southern territory, there was a large influx of refugees. The slave fugitives were labeled â€Å"contraband of war† and if it could be proven that their labor was used to help the Confederacy they were given their freedom. Despite declaring the black fugitives free, Lincoln still firmly held on to the idea that this war was not about setting the slaves free but holding the Union together. By early 1862 Lincoln was beginning to think that some kind of an emancipation order was needed if North was to win. The Proclamation As the war drew on, a number of governments in Europe started to think about recognizing the Confederacy and interceding against the Union. Also at home the Congressional and public opinion grew more towards the fact that slavery was not right and it needed to be abolished as a policy of war. Faced with such mounting pressure from all sides Lincoln felt that if a declaration was made to free the slaves, then European opinion would be with the North, and he would get the support needed for his own administration and the war effort, that he decided to draft the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862 (Emancipation Proclamation). On July 13, 1862, Lincoln read out the prelude proclamation to his Secretaries William H. Seward and Gideon Wells and both were left at a loss for words, and Lincoln did not discuss the matter further. On July 22 Lincoln read the Proclamation at his Cabinet meeting and got a mixed reaction. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, deciphered the measure as a method of taking the slave labor away from the Confederacy while allowing more men into the Union Army and supported its release as soon as possible, the Postmaster General Montgomery Blair predicted doom in the fall elections, while the Attorney General Edward Bates was against equality in the political and civil arena for the Blacks. Since the President was not concerned about his Cabinet’s view of the substance of the Proclamation only its style, the direction on future action was set (www. memory. loc. gov). To show that the proclamation was being issued out of strength and not a sign of weakness, Secretary of State Seward recommended that Lincoln not issue it until there was some significant Union victory. The opportunity presented itself when there was a Union victory at Antietam on September 22, 1862 and five days after that Lincoln issued the Proclamation which became effective on January 1, 1863. The chief function of the proclamation was to bring peace back and restore Union control, and was perceived as a firm commitment to abolish slavery. Proclamation also turned around the strengths of the warring parties by taking away the slave labor from the confederates, whose backbone in war efforts was formed by the slaves and gave this advantage to the Union (Borade). England and France were dependent upon the cotton they got from the South, and the Confederacy was hopeful that these countries would enter the war on their side. By turning the war into a fight against slavery, England and France sided with the Union because their citizens were against slavery (Emancipation Proclamation Prliminary Events, 2009). The purpose of limiting the proclamation to a few states was because Lincoln had the authority to take such an action on his own, a proclamation like this would not have Constitutional power over Union states since they had certain rights (The Emancipation Proclamation). In reality the proclamation freed very few slaves, because the border states fighting for the Union were not affected by it, nor were the southern areas already under Union control, and the rebellious states ignored the order. The Emancipation Proclamation is made up of two executive orders; the first order stated that if the breakaway did not put an end to the war and return to the Union by 1 January 1863, then all the slaves in the Confederate States would be set free. The second order listed the specific states to which the order applied. The Proclamation also had clauses which focused on rebellion and how to do away with it. It was stated that any individual starting a rebellion would be incarcerated for ten years and would be fined ten thousand dollars. If on the other hand, the individual freed his slaves, the court would not punish them (Borade). The proclamation also said that freed slaves who met with the necessary requirements would be allowed into the armed services of the Union, which was a major shift from the previous policy. The original Emancipation Proclamation is housed in the National Archives in Washington D. C. , and covers five pages of text. It was held together with thin red and blue ribbons which were stuck to the page that has signatures by the seal of the United States. W.P. Kinsella William Patrick Kinsella was born may 25, 1935 in Edmonton, Alberta. His father was a contractor and his mother was a printer. As an only child, Kinsella spent his early years in a log cabin near Lac Ste.-Anne, sixty miles northwest of Edmonton. He rarely saw other children and completed grades one through four by correspondence. His parents, grandmother, and aunt read to each other and told stories, Kinsella began writing fantasies when he was five or six; mostly baseball fantasies. Why did Kinsella like to write about baseball so much? The family moved to Edmonton when he was ten, and his father, a former Semi pro baseball player began taking him to baseball games. In eighth grade, Kinsella won a prize for "Diamond Doom," a baseball mystery. At age eighteen, he published his first story, a science fiction tale about a totalitarian society, in the Alberta Civil Service Bulletin. Kinsella worked as a government clerk, manager of a retail credit company, account executive for the City of Edmonton, owner of a n Italian restaurant, and taxicab driver while attending the University of Victoria where he received a B.A. in 1974. Then he attended a writer's workshop at the University of Iowa, earning a master of fine arts degree in 1978. He taught at the University of Calgary from 1978 to 1983. But he hated the academic life so he quit to write full time. Kinsella was married to Mildred Clay from 1965 to 1978. He married the writer Ann Knight in 1978 and they settled in White Rock, British Columbia and Iowa City, Iowa when not traveling to attend major league baseball games. Kinsella has two daughters, Shannon and Erin. In 1982 Kinsella wrote a best selling novel, "Shoeless Joe". "Kinsellas 1982 mythical baseball fable drew on the author's long-term love of the game" ( Wilson, Kathleen. 229). Mumbai – the city of dreams, the city of broken dreams. Millions go unnoticed like sand castles washed away at the beach, millions are attracted by the skyscrapers of Elphinstone, and millions are immortalized like the Elephanta-s. From Haji Ali to Siddhivinayak, from local trains to the Vada Pav, from the boulders of Bandstand to the sands of Juhu, from Mangeshkar to Tendulkar, from the Khans to the Bachchans, it is ‘Aamchi Mumbai’ all the way. From the trawlers’ struggle for fresh catch to the country’s top CEO-s’ meetings, India’s business capital doesn’t seem to sleep. With fruit juice at Rs. 5 a glass outside railway stations, to Rs. 200 a cappuccino at the Trident, life in Mumbai sails smooth with all its diversity. The night remains young from DJ jamming sessions to ek chaalis ki last local. Almost a hundred Bollywood movies have had as their opening scene a long shot of Victoria Terminus, introducing Mumbai as sapno ki na gari. Arvind Swami’s lovelorn ‘Tu Hi Re’ on old fort reminds us of Bombay, whereas Ranbir Kapur’s ‘Wake up Sid’ sketches Mumbai on a realistic canvas. Dreams come true here, dreams shatter here, but life doesn’t go off the tracks. The locals move on, carrying few lakh dreaming hearts every day. In Western countries the discussion is focussing on violent game and media content; in Japan on intensive game usage and the impact on the intellectual development of children. Their use requires that players manipulate objects using electronic tools and develop an understanding of the game as a complex system. Play is an effective teaching strategy both inside and outside school. According to Goldstein â€Å"more than 40 studies concludes that play enhances early development by at least 33%† [36 ]. Play with games and toys are an important part of child development to acquire a variety of skills for life, such as motor-coordination, social and cognitive skills [15]. As societies become increasingly concerned about the physical and psychological well-being of children, the value of playing and learning is getting crucial [22]. Players can progress from newcomer to expert, in particular in belonging to a social system [11]. Teaching: If computer games are to become part of educational settings, it is crucial to question existing stereotypes and to ensure that the culture of games players in education conforms to neither [13]. It is teachers’ stereotypes that resist change and not people; therefore, by interrogating conceptions of these stereotypes it is possible to avoid falling into the error of believing them to be exclusive descriptors of games players [11].
